As I raise my children, one thing that I want to inspire in their little hearts is an awe for God.  Do you want it too?  I want them to have a big picture of their God, to see Him as powerful, magnificent and incredible.

Just like anything else we desire to instill in our children, we need to be deliberate about teaching them how awesome is our God.  So with that in mind, here are three simple things to help you inspire an awe for God in the heart of your child.

1.  Verbally praise God for His creation.  Yes, I mean out loud.  Scripture says, “The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of his hands”  (Psalm 19:1).  I can’t tell you how often as we drive to preschool, we witness the incredible beauty of an amazing sunrise over a misty field.  It takes my breath away.

The clouds.  Sometimes the clouds look like the Creator cast His breath and spread them over the heavens.  Other times, they look like they could be plucked right out of the sky.  When we see the beauty of His creation, I am deliberate about commenting in front of my children how incredible is our God.

Draw into your conversation statements such as, “Thank you, Lord, for this beautiful day.”  “Wow, isn’t God amazing?  See how He made the trees look today.”  Begin to notice the sunset, the flowers, the mountains, the ocean.  Go to the zoo and enjoy all the animals God created.  Share at the dinner table which animal amazes you the most.

The more you do this, the more you’ll find yourself conscious of His handiwork.

2.  Point out and praise God for answered prayers.  Just the other day, God answered a little prayer of ours.  We talked about how great it is that we have a God who hears us and answers prayer.  Whether you are pointing out the safety God gave you, the provision He provided for or the way He blessed you or someone else, be deliberate about teaching your child that God hears us and answers.

As your children see that God answers prayer, not only will they learn that He is big and powerful to answer, but they will also see that He is a personal God who cares for them.

Add to your conversation:  “Thank you, Lord, for keeping us safe.”  “Thank you, Lord, for helping so and so.”  “Thank you, Lord, for the way You answered our prayer.  You are amazing.”

3.  Read Bible stories together.  As you read the Bible together, talk about how amazing God is.  What did the story show about His character and power?  Did He save Daniel?  Did He bring down the walls of Jericho or heal the leper?  My kids love reading Bible stories (our favorite resource is The Jesus Storybook Bible).  After reading with your child, talk about what we can learn about God.

Depending on the story, you might say, “Wow, isn’t God incredible?”  “He is so strong and powerful.”  “Look how He took care of His people.  There is nothing He can’t do.”

Do you have an awe for God?  Are you easily amazed at God’s work?  If not, ask Him to open your eyes to His majesty and power.  He will answer your request.  Then, watch as your children’s hearts echo the awe of our God.  Below is a beautiful song to draw you into worship of our awesome God.  And there is a verse I have never heard before.  I think you’ll enjoy it.
