Last Friday, we awoke to a beautiful ground covering of white snow.  The kids were excited, eager to touch it and yes, eat it.  (My husband, incidentally, has taught Sweet Boy the most important rule in regards to snow… Rule One:  Don’t eat yellow snow.)

But more than eating the first snow, we have a special tradition in our house.  We rush to our basement storage and search for the Snowman Cookie Jar.  And then we bake a special batch of cookies to fill it up.  But my favorite (and sentimental) part is that we write the date of the first snow on the bottom of the cookie jar.

I think making Snowflake Sugar Cookies would be perfect, but I opted for simple and we baked up a yummy batch of my cousin’s Chocolate Chip Cake Cookies.  Here is the EASY recipe.

Chocolate Chip Cake Cookies:
1 box of yellow cake mix
1 stick of butter
1 tsp vanilla
2 eggs
1 cup chocolate chips

Cream the butter, eggs and vanilla.  Add cake mix and continue to blend.  Fold in the chocolate chips and scoop onto a cookie sheet.  Bake for 8-10 minutes at 350 degrees.

I use a Spring Release Scoop to get more consistent-sized cookies.

These are the dates of our last two ‘first snowfalls.’

Happy Snowman!

If you have already missed your first snowfall, make a batch of cookies at the next one.  We don’t count flurries; the snow must cover the ground to deserve the tradition.  Amazon has some really cute snowmen cookie jars to get you started.
